The monsoon brings changes in temperature, humidity, and air pressure, as well as an increased risk of infections, which can place extra stress on the body. It is quite normal to dismiss symptoms like chest discomfort, breathlessness, or a racing heartbeat as temporary effects of the weather, but these could sometimes be warning signs of a serious underlying condition.

Let us understand the harmful effects of the monsoon, how to cope and when to seek medical attention.

What Is Chest Discomfort?

While it may sometimes be caused by acidity or muscle strain, persistent or severe chest discomfort should never be ignored. Chest discomfort may feel like:

  • Pressure or tightness in the chest radiating to the arm, jaw or back on the left side
  • Burning or heaviness
  • Squeezing sensation
  • Pain in the arm, jaw or back

Shortness of Breath

Breathlessness is the feeling of being unable to get enough air. Shortness of breath occurs when the heart cannot pump enough oxygen-rich blood to the body. Feeling breathless after even a light activity could be a sign of heart failure or fluid buildup in the lungs

Pay attention to:

  • Difficulty breathing while walking or climbing stairs
  • Breathlessness while resting
  • Waking up at night gasping for air
  • Shortness of breath accompanied by chest pain or dizziness

What Are Palpitations?

When you feel dizzy or faint without any clear reason, it could be because your brain is not receiving enough oxygen-rich blood due to heart problems. It may also indicate low blood pressure, valve issues, or heart rhythm abnormalities. Never ignore repeated dizziness, especially if it comes with chest pain or fatigue.

  • A racing heartbeat
  • Fluttering in the chest
  • Skipped heartbeats
  • Irregular or pounding heartbeat

Are sensations of Palpitations. Occasional palpitations may not be serious, but frequent episodes or those associated with other symptoms require medical evaluation.

Symptoms which should not be ignored

  • Swelling in legs, ankles, or feet
  • Extreme fatigue or weakness
  • Family history of heart disease
  • Sudden sweating, nausea, or vomiting

Common Causes of Heart Problems

  • High blood pressure or high cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Smoking and excessive alcohol use
  • Stress and lack of sleep
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Physical inactivity
  • Family history of heart disease

Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore

  • Chest pain lasting more than a few minutes
  • Severe breathlessness
  • Chest discomfort that spreads to the arm, jaw, neck, or back
  • Palpitations with dizziness or fainting
  • Cold sweats
  • Nausea or vomiting along with chest pain
  • Bluish lips or fingertips
  • Sudden weakness or confusion

These may indicate a heart attack, heart failure, dangerous arrhythmias, or a serious lung condition.

Who Is at Greater Risk During the Monsoon?

People with:

  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • Previous heart disease
  • Asthma or COPD (lung disease)
  • Kidney disease
  • Obesity
  • A family history of heart disease
  • Age above 50 years

For Diagnosis

The healthcare giver may request:

  • Physical examination
  • ECG (Electrocardiogram)
  • Echocardiogram
  • Chest X-ray
  • Blood tests
  • Cardiac enzyme tests
  • Holter monitoring for irregular heartbeats
  • CT scan or stress test if required

Tips to Protect Your Heart During the Rainy Season

  • Take prescribed medicines regularly.
  • Monitor blood pressure and blood sugar regularly
  • Stay hydrated
  • Avoid excessive salt and fried foods.
  • Exercise regularly-indoors or outdoors
  •  Treat respiratory infections promptly.
  • Get adequate sleep.
  • Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol.
  • Never ignore recurring chest irregularities
