Pacemaker Implantation: When Is It Needed and How Does It Help?

The heart has its own electrical system, which controls how quickly and regularly it beats. When these electrical signals become too slow or fail to reach the heart chambers properly, a person may experience dizziness, unusual tiredness, fainting or breathlessness. In some cases, the rhythm problem may have very few obvious symptoms and is picked up during an ECG or another cardiac evaluation.

This is where a pacemaker is usually considered. At STAR Hospitals, Hyderabad, pacemaker implantation is part of the hospital’s cardiac and electrophysiology services, alongside arrhythmia evaluation, ICD and cardiac resynchronisation therapy, electrophysiology studies and ablation procedures.

When Might a Pacemaker Be Needed?

A pacemaker is generally considered when the heart beats too slowly or when there is a significant problem with the electrical conduction system of the heart.

  • Common situations include symptomatic bradycardia and certain types of heart block, although the decision depends on the exact rhythm abnormality, its cause and the patient's symptoms.
  • For an older adult in India, for example, repeated episodes of dizziness or fainting should not simply be attributed to age. Similarly, unexplained fatigue or breathlessness can have several causes, and a cardiac evaluation may be needed before deciding whether a pacemaker is appropriate.

The first step is therefore diagnosis rather than implantation. Depending on the patient's symptoms and history, a cardiologist may use tests such as an ECG, Holter monitoring, echocardiography or other cardiac investigations to understand the rhythm problem. STAR Hospitals' Cardiology Department provides arrhythmia diagnosis and treatment as well as advanced cardiac investigations.

What Does a Pacemaker Actually Do?

A pacemaker is a small electronic device implanted under the skin, usually in the chest. It monitors the heart's rhythm and, when required, delivers electrical impulses to help maintain an appropriate heart rate.

In practical terms, the device helps prevent the heart from remaining abnormally slow. This can reduce symptoms caused by an inadequate heart rate and, in appropriately selected patients, support more consistent cardiac function.

The type of device is chosen according to the individual's rhythm problem. STAR Hospitals' cardiac specialists provide single- and dual-chamber pacemaker implantation, while its electrophysiology services also include more advanced device therapies such as ICD and CRT implantation.

Pacemaker Care at STAR Hospitals

Pacemaker treatment is not an isolated procedure. It sits within a larger rhythm-management service.

  • STAR Hospitals has a dedicated focus on cardiac electrophysiology, with its device clinic managing pacemakers, defibrillators and resynchronisation devices.
  • The department provides electrophysiology studies, 3D mapping and ablation for several rhythm disorders. This allows the cardiac team to assess whether a patient's problem is best managed with medication, an ablation procedure, a pacemaker or another cardiac device.
  • The electrophysiology team offers conduction system pacing and lead revisions, while its cardiac services include minimally invasive, catheter-based procedures.
  • For selected patients, STAR Hospitals also lists leadless pacemaker (MICRA) technology among its cardiac services. Unlike conventional pacemakers, a leadless pacemaker is a small device placed inside the heart through a catheter rather than using a conventional chest-mounted generator and leads. Whether this approach is suitable depends on the patient's individual cardiac condition and clinical assessment.

What Happens After Implantation?

Getting a pacemaker does not mean that the heart condition has disappeared. Regular follow-up remains important:

  • The device needs to be checked periodically, and the cardiologist may review its function along with the patient's symptoms and overall heart health.
  • Patients should also receive clear advice about medicines, physical activity, wound care and follow-up appointments after the procedure.

The exact recovery period and precautions vary according to the type of pacemaker and the patient's other medical conditions.

When Should You See a Cardiologist?

Persistent dizziness, fainting, unexplained weakness, breathlessness or a noticeably slow pulse deserves medical attention, particularly when symptoms recur. A pacemaker is not required for every person with a slow heartbeat; the underlying cause and the clinical significance of the rhythm problem have to be established first.

At STAR Hospitals, Banjara Hills and Nanakramguda, patients can access cardiology, electrophysiology, cardiac imaging and device-based therapies under one cardiac care service.  If a pacemaker has been suggested, the important question is not simply whether the device is needed, but which type of rhythm problem is being treated and which device is appropriate for that particular heart. A cardiologist or cardiac electrophysiologist can make that assessment after a detailed evaluation. To know more, book an appointment with us today
