Gallbladder and Bile Duct Cancer Awareness Month is observed in February to educate people and promote early detection. These cancers are often diagnosed at a later stage due to non-specific and easily overlooked symptoms, making awareness especially important.
Gall Bladder: Located beneath the liver, the gall bladder is a small, pear-shaped organ whose primary function is to store and concentrate bile. Bile is a digestive fluid produced by the liver. When fatty food is consumed, the gall bladder releases bile into the intestine to help digest fats and absorb fat-soluble vitamins.
Bile Duct: Bile ducts are a network of thin tubes that carry bile from the liver and gall bladder to the small intestine. Their function is to ensure bile reaches the intestine at the right time to aid digestion and to help the body eliminate waste products processed by the liver. Cancer of the bile ducts is also known as cholangiocarcinoma.
The liver makes bile
The gall bladder stores bile
The bile ducts transport bile to the intestines for digestion
Gall bladder cancer and bile duct cancer are relatively uncommon but serious conditions. Cancers arising in these areas are frequently detected late, which limits treatment options and outcomes. Early recognition of risk factors and warning symptoms can lead to timely diagnosis and improved survival. That is why awareness matters. By the time clear signs appear, the disease may already have progressed.
The signs of bile duct and gall bladder cancer are often vague and may be mistaken for common digestive problems. Symptoms can include:
Bloating sensation in upper abdomen
Persistent abdominal pain, especially on the right side
Yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice)
Dark urine and pale stools
Unexplained weight loss
Loss of appetite
Persistent itching
Unexplained fever or fatigue without a clear cause
To determine and confirm the diagnosis, doctors may use:
Treatment of these cancers depends on the stage, location, and extent of the cancer:
Surgery offers the best chance of cure when the disease is detected early. Advances in hepatobiliary and minimally invasive surgery have improved recovery and outcomes for selected patients.
Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy may be used before surgery, after surgery, or when surgery is not possible.
Targeted Therapy and Immunotherapy are emerging options in carefully selected cases, based on tumour biology.
Palliative Care focuses on symptom control and quality of life in advanced stages.
Doctors play a pivotal role in the management of cancer. They help identify early symptoms, monitor high-risk patients, and guide timely investigations. Public health campaigns and continuous medical education contribute significantly to reducing delays in diagnosis. When patients and healthcare professionals work together, early detection and better outcomes become achievable. Being connected to a multi-speciality hospital ensures prompt access to coordinated care, especially during emergencies.
