Allergy is a commonly used term for sneezing, itchy skin, rashes, seasonal colds, and coughs. They are an overreaction of the immune system to allergens, which are actually harmless substances mistakenly treated as dangerous. When exposed to these, the body releases chemicals such as histamine, which can cause allergic symptoms.
Generally, people take an OTC anti-allergy medicine for a couple of days and get well. But is this the case with all the allergies? Let us find out.
Bee and other insect stings and bites
Dust mites
Bed bugs
Certain foods like mushrooms, brinjals
Certain medications
Moulds ( growth that develops in the damp areas or on old food)
Pets and other animals
Poison ivy rashes
Seasonal allergies like pollen
Symptoms depend on the occurrence and nature of allergens, such as touching or breathing allergens. They include:

A healthcare provider can diagnose allergies with a skin test or a blood test. To determine what allergens to test for, they will check for symptoms and possible allergens the person could be exposed to, especially through work or hobbies. Depending on the suspected allergies, health workers may recommend-
Breathing tests
Drug or food challenge tests
A patch test looks for a contact skin reaction that happens over a few days.
Avoid touching or getting licked by pets and animals if you are allergic, and change your clothes after you have been around them. Do not allow them in your bedroom or on your furniture. Do not touch their toys.
Regularly vacuum clean rugs, carpets and other surfaces to help remove dust, animal dander, pollen and other allergens.
Use high-efficiency particulate (HEPA) air filters to help remove allergens from the air around you.
Keep your windows closed during pollen season.
Change the filters on your HVAC system on the recommended schedule.
As some common allergens are hard to avoid, a healthcare provider might recommend certain medications or treatments on a long-term or regular basis. These will help reduce symptoms or the risk of reactions.
Most allergies cannot be permanently cured, but many can be effectively controlled.
1. Allergies that reduce or disappear over time with proper treatment:
Childhood allergies, like milk or egg allergy, may go away as a child grows.
Some drug or food allergies can persist for life.
Seasonal allergies, which recur every year, can be managed well.
2. Allergies that can improve or go away with treatment:
Mild food allergies in children
Certain skin allergies
Seasonal allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever
3. Allergies that usually need long-term control
Dust mite and pollen allergies
Asthma-related allergies
Severe food allergies to nuts, shellfish, etc
Drug allergies
Allergies, in general, cannot be permanently cured. Most are managed or controlled. Some people, especially children, may outgrow certain allergies. Severity matters. Mild seasonal allergies are easier to control, while severe food or drug allergies require strict avoidance and preparedness.
No universal cure: Most allergies are lifelong conditions
Outgrowing allergies: Some food allergies, like milk or egg, may fade as children grow, but others, like peanut or shellfish, often persist
Management focus: Medications such as antihistamines, nasal sprays, lifestyle changes like avoiding triggers, and emergency treatments are the mainstay.
Immunotherapy: Allergy shots or oral drops can retrain the immune system, reducing symptoms and sometimes inducing long-term tolerance
With Allergen immunotherapy, avoidance strategies and lifestyle changes, people with allergies can lead healthy, comfortable lives.
