Robotic Knee Replacement vs Traditional: Cost Difference and Recovery Comparison

Dr. Shashi Kanth G

Our knees carry us through every step of life, from learning to crawl to childhood adventures to the demands of adulthood, along with body weight. Over the years, wear and tear, arthritis, injury, or age-related joint damage gradually makes even simple activities like walking, climbing stairs, or getting up from a sitting position painful. Then comes the round of medications, physiotherapy, and lifestyle changes. When these no longer provide relief, knee replacement surgery offers a new lease of life by restoring mobility and significantly reducing pain

A surgical knee replacement can restore mobility and provide relief from years of chronic pain caused by arthritis or joint damage. With the progress in medical sciences, today, patients have two surgical options: traditional knee replacement and robotic-assisted knee replacement. Both procedures aim to achieve the same goal. They differ in terms of surgical precision, recovery and cost.

Why is knee surgery required?

Knee replacement may be considered when advanced arthritis or joint damage causes persistent pain and begins to interfere with everyday activities. Common goals of surgery are to:

  • Relieve chronic pain
  • Restore joint function
  • Improve mobility
  • Correct deformity
  •  Enhance overall quality of life

What is Knee Replacement Surgery?

Knee replacement is a modern surgical procedure in which a damaged or worn-out knee joint is replaced with artificial implants, also called prostheses, in order to relieve pain, restore movement, and improve joint function. It is recommended for patients with severe arthritis, injury, or degenerative conditions that are causing persistent pain and mobility issues. There are two main types of Knee Replacement Surgery:

  • Traditional (Regular) Knee Replacement
  • Robotic Knee Replacement Surgery

Types of Knee Replacement Surgery

  • Total knee replacement: Replaces all three compartments of the knee -suitable for widespread arthritis.
  • Partial knee replacement: Repairs only the damaged component. Robotic assistance is particularly well-suited here given the precision required in a smaller working area.
  • Revision knee replacement: Replaces a previously failed implant. Robotic assistance can help navigate altered anatomy from prior surgery.

Both robotic and traditional approaches are available for all three types.

Difference between Robotic and Traditional Surgery

Robotic Knee Replacement

Traditional Knee Replacement

Computer-assisted surgical planning

Conventional preoperative planning

May use advanced 3D imaging depending on the system

Uses standard imaging and conventional instruments

Greater precision in planned bone cuts and implant positioning

Surgeon uses mechanical guides and intraoperative measurements

Allows planning based on individual anatomy

Uses established alignment techniques

Surgeon remains in control of the procedure

Surgeon performs the procedure manually

Usually involves higher technology and equipment costs

Generally has lower procedure-related technology costs

Robotic vs Traditional Knee Replacement: Recovery Comparison

This is one of the questions patients ask most often: Does robotic knee replacement recover faster? The answer is not as straightforward as it may seem.

Both procedures require rehabilitation, physiotherapy and gradual strengthening. Robotic-assisted surgery may provide some patients with less early pain, improved early function or a shorter hospital stay. However, recovery depends on several factors, including age, muscle strength, weight, overall health, the severity of arthritis, whether one or both knees were operated on, and adherence to physiotherapy.

Robotic Knee Replacement vs Traditional: Cost Difference

Traditional knee replacement generally costs less because it uses conventional surgical instruments and does not require the additional robotic technology, software and associated infrastructure.

Robotic knee replacement typically costs more due to:

  • Sophisticated robotic technology
  • Advanced imaging and planning
  • Specialised surgical equipment
  • Technology and infrastructure costs
  • Robotic planning software and system-related expenses

The actual cost varies considerably between hospitals and patients. It can depend on the type of knee replacement, implant selected, surgeon's expertise, hospital stay, investigations, rehabilitation and other medical requirements. A higher price does not automatically mean a better outcome.

Is Robotic Knee Replacement Worth the Additional Cost?

For some patients, it can be a useful option. Robotic assistance can provide more precise planning and execution, particularly where accurate alignment and bone preservation are important. At the same time, conventional knee replacement remains a highly effective and well-established procedure. The choice should therefore be based on the patient's anatomy, condition, surgeon's recommendation, expected benefits and affordability.

Robotic Knee Replacement at STAR Hospitals, Hyderabad

At STAR Hospitals, robotic-assisted joint replacement is supported by advanced orthopaedic infrastructure and experienced knee replacement surgeons. Our Orthopeadics team also manages revision knee replacements, hip replacements and sports-related conditions.

STAR Hospitals uses the VELYS Robotic-Assisted Surgery System for robotic joint replacement. The technology is designed to assist the surgeon with planning, precision and implant positioning while keeping the surgeon in complete control of the operation.

Patients also receive post-operative physiotherapy and rehabilitation, which remain essential regardless of whether the knee replacement is performed using robotic assistance or conventional techniques. Book an appointment with us to learn more.
