Working from home has made the commute shorter, but for many young professionals, the hours spent at a desk have become longer. A laptop on the dining table, a sofa that doubles as a workstation, a phone held at an awkward angle and several hours without getting up can gradually add up to neck pain, shoulder stiffness, backache and wrist discomfort.
That does not mean working from home directly causes an orthopedic disorder in every person. The bigger issue is the combination of prolonged sitting, limited movement, poor workstation setup and repetitive positions. Low back pain, for example, can affect people at any age and is a worldwide problem that might even lead to disability.
- The neck and upper back are common spots. Hours spent looking down at a laptop or phone can leave the neck and shoulder muscles working continuously, particularly when the screen is positioned too low or too far away.
- The lower back can suffer for a different reason. Sitting for long periods reduces opportunities to move and change position. If the chair does not provide adequate support, or if someone regularly works from a bed or sofa, maintaining the same position for hours can become uncomfortable.
- Wrist and hand discomfort can also develop with prolonged keyboard and mouse use, particularly when the wrists remain in an awkward position or repetitive movements are performed without sufficient breaks.
These symptoms can include:
Aches alone do not necessarily indicate a serious orthopedic condition. Persistent pain, however, deserves attention rather than becoming something you simply work around.
Buying an expensive office chair will not compensate for sitting continuously for eight or nine hours. Movement matters. WHO identifies physical inactivity and sedentary behaviour as important health concerns, while regular physical activity has benefits for physical and mental health. For someone working from home, that can mean making small changes throughout the working day:
There is no single perfect sitting posture that you need to hold all day. Changing position and avoiding long uninterrupted periods of sitting are just as important.
A mild ache that settles after changing your routine may not require specialist treatment. But if pain is persistent, repeatedly returns or begins interfering with sleep, exercise or everyday activities, it is sensible to have it assessed.
Certain symptoms warrant particular attention as these may indicate nerve involvement and should not simply be attributed to poor posture.
- Numbness or tingling
- Muscle weakness and pain travelling down an arm or leg
- Difficulty walking or loss of coordination
Back pain can have many causes, and most cases are non-specific. WHO notes that around 90% of low back pain is non-specific, which is one reason why an appropriate clinical assessment matters before deciding that an imaging scan or procedure is necessary.
This is an important point for younger patients. An orthopedic consultation does not mean that surgery is around the corner. Depending on the cause, treatment may involve activity modification, medication when appropriate, physiotherapy, strengthening exercises, posture and movement correction, or other non-surgical measures.
STAR Hospitals' physiotherapy services include customised exercise programmes, hands-on joint mobilisation and activity modification, along with therapies such as heat, ice and electrical stimulation where appropriate. The department specifically provides rehabilitation for back and neck pain, lumbar and cervical spondylosis, joint conditions and other musculoskeletal problems.
For persistent or more complex conditions, the orthopedic team can investigate whether there is an underlying problem involving the spine, joints, muscles or nerves.
At STAR Hospitals, Hyderabad, the Orthopedics department provides care for a broad range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:
- Treatments for back and neck problems, joint disorders, sports injuries and other orthopedic conditions with both non-surgical and advanced surgical care where required.
- Spine surgery services, including minimally invasive spine procedures, spinal decompression and fusion for selected conditions when traditional treatment options are ineffective.
For many work-from-home professionals, however, the first step is much simpler: finding out why the pain is occurring and addressing it before it becomes a long-term problem.
