Dust & Respiratory Issues: Hyderabad’s Urban Lung Crisis

Dr. Peddi Srikanth

Hyderabad is changing fast, and so is the air we breathe. Construction dust, traffic, and shrinking green spaces now hang over our mornings and settle into our lungs by night. The result: more coughs, wheeze, and tired breath across every age group. This is our city’s silent health crisis, but it’s fixable.

Sources of Dust Pollution in Hyderabad

Hyderabad repeatedly points to road dust and vehicle emissions as major contributors to particulate pollution.

The Immediate Symptoms of Dust Exposure

Cough, wheezing, throat irritation, burning in the eyes, chronic respiratory conditions like asthma, bronchitis, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), cardiovascular issues and reduced lung capacity are some symptoms of health issues caused by dust exposure. Especially vulnerable are children, the elderly and pregnant women.

Doctors across the city report a steady rise in pollution-linked complaints, chronic cough, poorly controlled asthma, and recurrent infections - especially during dry, dusty months and post-festival peaks.

These signs can signal a flare of asthma/COPD or other urgent issues.

What Makes Hyderabad’s Case Unique

High population density: The booming IT sector and expanding industrial zones have led to crowded neighbourhoods, increased traffic and heavy construction. That means more dust and exhaust in the very places we spend our time.

Inconsistent on-ground control: Regulations exist to control dust from construction sites. However, the enforcement is often negligent. There are periodic crackdowns and fines, yet dust violations remain common.

Climate factors: Deforestation is the highest contributor of pollution, resulting in dry winds, low rainfall in many catchment areas. Additionally, in years or seasons with below-average rainfall, there is less natural settling of airborne particles, making pollution more severe.

Personal and Policy Solutions:

At the Individual Level:

To combat breathing foul air

  • Use N95 masks while outdoors

  • Install air purifiers and indoor plants

  • Get regular ENT and respiratory check-ups

  • Avoid peak pollution hours for outdoor activities

At the Government Level, the Municipality and the state government should:

  • Institute strict dust control measures at construction sites.

  • Greener urban planning of tree belts, rainwater sprays, and rainwater harvesting.

  • Ensure strict vehicular emission norms and public transport improvement.

The Way Forward to a greener and pollution-free Hyderabad may look like this:

  • Awareness promoted through schools, offices and clinics.

  • The city was cleared of roadside garbage.

  • People are educated on and committed to keeping the city clean.

  • Examples of cities like Delhi, Beijing that tackled similar crises are taken into consideration.

  • Technology and public health campaigns are applied to reduce exposure.

  • GHMC ensures dust control drives and green cover plans

  • Improved road maintenance, weak enforcement.

  • Stricter regulations on construction and vehicle pollution are ensured

As citizens, we have a right to clean and healthy living. But it is in our hands to keep, not just our homes, but also the surrounding areas clean and green
