Bone marrow is the soft, spongy tissue found inside bones such as the hips, ribs, breastbone, and spine. It is responsible for producing red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets that help carry oxygen, fight infections, and prevent bleeding. When bone marrow becomes damaged or fails to function properly, it can lead to serious blood disorders and cancers. In such cases, a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT), also known as a Stem Cell Transplant, may offer a life-saving treatment option.
A Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) is a procedure which replaces the damaged or destroyed blood cells with new healthy blood cells in the body. BMT is used to treat some cancers like leukemia, multiple myeloma, some types of lymphoma and blood-related disorders such as thalassemia and anemia. A bone marrow transplant is also called a cell transplant.

A bone marrow transplant may be recommended for patients with:
Patient's own stem cells are taken before chemotherapy or radiation treatment, and stored. Reinfused once the treatment is done to help retain the proper function of blood cell formation. This is also called a rescue transplant.
The stem cells are donated by the donor in this procedure. Mostly, genetically matched marrow is used for the patient; the donor can be a family member. There are National Bone Marrow Registries, where donors can be found.
In this procedure, stem cells are taken from a newborn baby’s umbilical cord. The stem cells are frozen and stored until the need for a transplant arises. The process is quite similar to a blood transfusion; injected blood cells travel from the blood to the bone marrow.
Doctors perform Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) testing to identify a compatible donor. A matched sibling donor is often preferred, although unrelated matched donors may also be suitable.
