How many times have we heard “my joints hurt more when it gets cold”, especially from people affected with arthritis?
Winter is a cosy, festive season. But the beauty of winter gets lost in the pain it brings to the joints for those who suffer from arthritis. Understand that winter does not cause arthritis, but cold weather can worsen its symptoms.
Arthritis means inflammation of the joints. It is characterised by pain, stiffness and swelling in the joints, and difficulty in movement in advanced cases. Two common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis (wear and tear) and rheumatoid arthritis (an autoimmune condition). Osteoarthritis, in particular, is commonly evaluated and managed by orthopaedic specialists, as it involves structural wear of bones, cartilage, and supporting joint tissues.

Our joints operate best in temperate weather. When the weather gets cooler, the synovial fluid that acts like motor oil in our joints becomes more like sludge. Cold air also weakens the immune response and affects muscles, ligaments, and joint structures, which together influence the skeletal and musculoskeletal system. Here are some of how winter affects your joints:
Cold Weather Makes Joints Stiff: Dampness increases discomfort. In winter, low temperatures cause muscles, ligaments and tendons around the joints to tighten up. This leads to pain while starting movement (especially in the morning), stiffness and reduced flexibility. Cold and damp weather can make joints feel achy, heavy and swollen.
Changes in Air Pressure: During cold or rainy weather, air pressure drops. This can cause tissues around the already inflamed joints to expand slightly, increasing pain and discomfort.
Reduced Blood Flow to Joints: Cold causes blood vessels to narrow, reducing blood flow to hands, knees, and feet. Less blood flow means poor nourishment to joints and increased pain sensitivity.
Less Physical Activity: People tend to move less in winter due to cold mornings, shorter days and the fear of pain. Lesser movement causes joints to become stiff and weak, worsening arthritis symptoms.
Low Sunlight and Vitamin D deficiency: Winter has less sunlight exposure, leading to Vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D is important for bone strength, muscle function and reducing inflammation. Low levels of Vitamin D can worsen joint pain.

Early care can prevent long-term joint damage. It is advised to consult a doctor if you notice any of the following conditions:
· Severe or increasing pain
· More joint swelling or redness
· Difficulty in daily activities
· Unrelieved pain even with medication
An orthopaedic consultation may be required when pain is linked to joint degeneration, cartilage loss, or reduced mobility.
Winter does not cause arthritis, but cold weather can worsen its symptoms. With the right care, warmth and regular movement, arthritis pain can be managed even during colder months. Remember: staying active and warm is the key to keeping joint pain under control in winter.
